The History of the Posegate Name
Charles Hill Postgate and Rachel Ferguson moved from near Wenchester, VA to Near Highland, Ohio about 1804. Charles died leaving behind four children.
Rachel married a Quaker named John Crispin and the two of them raised the four Posegate children as well as several of their own. It seems that Rachel could not spell her first husband's name and taught her children to spell their name "Posegate," even though the Quaker scribes wrote it "Postgate."[1]
