During his lifetime, Mr. Nelson was the founder of a large manufacturing company in St. Louis, instituted a model labor village, established a system of profit-sharing, and promoted a chain of co-operative stores. Born in Norway, he emigrated in his early childhood with his parents to Missouri, where they settled on a farm. When the Civil War broke out, he joined the Union forces. After the war, he tried business ventures in St. Louis, St. Joseph and Hiawatha, Kansas.

Returning to St. Louis in 1872, he established the N.O. Nelson Manufacturing Company, makers of building and plumbing supplies. He moved his factories to southern Illinois and formed the village of Leclaire in 1890. Enthusiastic about the profit-sharing system, he introduced it into his plant. In 1902 he founded a co-operative store in Leclaire. In 1911 he established in New Orleans a farmer’s co-operative creamery and credit association and the next year formed a co-operative grocery store. In a few years he had established a chin of 63 co-operative stores, 3 butcher shops, a bakery, creamery, condiment factory and a co-operative farm. The co-operative chain in New Orleans collapsed and in 1918 he filed a petition for bankruptcy on the project. Mr. Nelson was responsible for the organization in St. Louis of many free recreational and cultural activities for the underprivileged.

Almeria Posegate married N. O. Nelson on 22 Apr 1868 in Buchanan County, MO. Two children of this marriage survived to adulthood: Julia and Charlotte.

Almeria POSEGATE NELSON (1844-12/29/1918) is Capt. POSEGATE’s sister; she states this in a notarized letter supporting Emma POSEGATE’s widow’s claim to F. M. POSEGATE’s military pension. On April 23, 1868 Almeria was married to Nelson 0. NELSON (9/11/1844-10/25/1822) of Buchanan County’s Norwegian community. The NELSONs were married in the POSEGATE residence at Francis and 20th. The NELSONs moved to St. Louis where N. 0. NELSON became a successful industrialist. He was very progressive in his methods of dealing with labor and established a successful hardware manufacturing factory in LeClaire, Illinois. He expanded his operations to include a wide range of experimental
industries and plantations.

Mrs. POSEGATE was born in New Petersburg in Highland County, Ohio, Jan. 31, 1840, and was united in marriage to Mr. POSEGATE at the residence of her parents, James and Hannah JOHNSON, in the village of New Lexington in Highland County, Ohio, on the sixth day of September, 1858 and immediately came with her husband, then the proprietor of the St. Joseph “West “to this city. In the fall of 1860 her husband returned with her to New Lexington, Ohio where they lived until the spring of 1867, when they returned to this city … Soon after returning Mrs. POSEGATE was stricken with rheumatism and during the past eight years has been a helpless cripple therefrom. During her long years of confinement from the effects of this terrible visitation her sufferings were indescribable, but she bore them with fortitude almost unprecedented, and by her patience she taught a lesson of Christian virtue and forbearance to her husband, children and immediate relatives that can but leave its impression upon their lives for all time hereafter. Mrs. POSEGATE was a woman of rare natural ability and, had health permitted, it is thought by those who know her best that her life would have been prolific of much good for the community in which she
lived …. Mrs. POSEGATE leaves her husband and two children; Kate the wife of Robert HUGHART, and Mimie [Mary], aged 14 years, together with her mother, Mrs. Hannah JOHNSON, who had been her constant nurse and attendant. She also leaves a brother and sister, residents of this city, Mr. John W. JOHNSON, Secretary of the Steam Printing Company, and Mrs. George W. BELL.

A separate obituary in the Gazette 7/23/1878 proclaims “FUNERAL OF MRS. POSEGATE-A Large Concourse of MOURNING Friends Follow the REMAINS to Mt. Morah Cemetery”.
